2005/2006 Outreach Project
Habitat for Humanity 2006 Builder Blitz
How do you build 10 houses in one week? Through generous
volunteers, hard work and a grass roots commitment to
improve our communities.
Three metro area Habitat for Humanity affiliates are
participating in the 2006 Habitat for Humanity Builder
Blitz with the goal of completing 10 houses by June
9, 2006. The Builder Blitz focuses on having professional
homebuilders and national manufactures donate their
time and materials to complete a single family home
in a "week". It does of course take much longer
and more volunteers to complete the homes in time. Each
affiliate must have their building sites prepared and
framing ready before the builders can begin to build.
Additionally all the architectural work, site planning,
material procurement, and building schedules, inspections
requests and permits must be completed and approved
before the building can begin. The families who will
purchase these homes also have to be ready in time and
have completed the required sweat equity, savings, and
classes in order to close on the home. Then, in a short
time - potentially just one week - a house will be built
and a family can have a home of their own. Pretty amazing
isn't.
How can you help make it happen - volunteer!
PMI is partnering with the metro area Habitat for Humanity
affiliates and the generous local home builder to help
with planning, meeting facilitation, and general project
oversight. We have a need for more volunteers - it takes
about 6 to 8 hours a month and a commitment through
June of 2006. Additionally the Portland Affiliate is
interested in receiving MS Project Training.
Please contact Barbara Bakken
()
if you are interested. There are four project areas:
1. Overall Logistics and Coordination
of the 4 Committees
Chair: Meghan Mahaffy
PMI Volunteers: Barbara Bakken and Kelly Vanderwal
Logistics includes:
- Get builders to volunteer
- Coordinate with the appropriate government officials
and building inspectors for the building permits and
inspections
- Prepare the building sites so that it is ready to
frame
- Provide building site management during the construction
- Have the selected families ready to move into their
homes
Kay Pexa and Brian Smith are PMI volunteers who put
together the family partnering "project planning
and tracking" materials for the Willamette West
Chapter and we are hoping to reuse it for the Blitz.
2. Builders
Chair: Tim Leslie
PMI Volunteers: Andrea Sliger, Van Le, and one more
PMI Volunteer
The Builders are truly the heart of the matter. They
do all the construction planning, get the bulk of the
building materials and subcontractors donated to the
specific house they are building. They also provide
the building crews to build that house in a week.
- Establish a Builder Liaison (from builder &
from affiliate)
- Plan Builder Schedules
- Through the Liaison ensure affiliate coordination
(site and promotion/ management)
o Starting point of house
o Type of house
o Location of house
- Hold monthly meetings/communications
3. Manufacture Donations
and Coordination with Builder Donations
Chair: Steve Messinetti
PMI Rep: We need two PMI Volunteers
Manufacturing and Donations focuses on getting the
large appliances, flooring and other "name brand"
donations. It is, to some extent, focused acquiring
some of the supplies. I am not sure to what level this
committee also has to do the scheduling of delivery
to the construction site or if this is what the Builders
committee is doing.
- Work with builders to determine what is best the
best division of seeking donations
- Work with name brand manufactures to secure donations
of windows, doors, lumber, landscape materials, cabinets,
flooring, plumbing fixtures, electrical fixtures,
etc.
- Plan the how to get donated materials to sites and
confirm with builders on schedule
- Determine what is Habitat for Humanity International
is securing and communicate it to builders
4. Marketing and Public
Relations
Chair: Erika Kennel
PMI Volunteers: We need two volunteers
The Marketing and Public Relations work is fairly self
explanatory but a unique twist is that the Habitat Affiliates
need to not only do PR for their mission but also provide
high visibility for the builders who are volunteering
their time.
- Provide a 1 page flyer for Builders
o requirements (builder/HFH)
o locations/contacts
o Promotional commitments
- Determine which affiliate is coordinating which
marketing/PR event
- Determine marketing/PR budget
- Coordinate with local news sources coverage of the
- Plan and deliver Events (pre & post)
- Provide Builder recognition
- Plan and deliver finished home dedications
- Provide Signage/websites
